As you might have gathered by now, I tend to be a bit of a sucker for 'Making Of' books, even when I have to wait for DVD release before I can see the films. 'Spider-Man 2' is no exception to this and one advantage books like this has over the special effects magazines is that it's a tad bigger, larger pictures and just focuses on the one film.
In the long term, these books are practically limited editions in that once the focus moves on to another film, they've fulfilled their purpose but the long-term collector has a bit of history that can rise in value over the years.
Much of the focus of this book on 'Spider-Man 2' is on the creation of Doctor Octopus and the climatic pier scene far more than the star of the film, Spidey, himself. It doesn't out-line the film, just focusing on these elements. Whether this was because so much of these issues were covered with the book on the first film or a desire not to give all the secrets or plot away is debatable.
Certainly the creation of Doc Ock has to be regarded as a first in comic-based films and deserves some attention but if you're treating this book as a sneak through the entire film then I think you might be disappointed. As a reference to bringing a man with 4 tentacles hooked off his back, then this book will be of extreme interest and no doubt leave you speculating as to who would make a good villain for the third Spidey film when so much attention to making a comicbook character move as here.
If you're into the technical stuff behind the 'Spider-Man 2' film, then this is worth having. Part of me thinks it would be worth having a sequel to this book out to cover the things that haven't been covered in as much detail. On the other hand, one can't blame the production team for wanting to keep some of it secret as well. In the meantime, marvel at the production sketches and other such that shows how much work goes on behind the scenes of such a film that gets onto the screen.
