'The Sellamillion' is quite simply a scream. From the gloriously daft map at the front to the meanderingly weird but skilfully devised appendices at the back, I had difficulty putting it down. The topical political references had me smiling wryly, too.

Don't be put off by the number of pages. These little books are only about half the size of a normal paperback and are very easy to read. The only hesitation I'd have in recommending them to everyone - well, adults anyway, given some of the subject matter and not Tolkien purists, who will hate it, is that to understand some of the humour, you need to be familiar with British attitudes and culture. You also need to know 'The Hobbit' for the 'The Soddit' to make sense, so it's essential to read that first. Oddly enough, I found the opposite with 'The Sellamillion'. It's been many, many moons since I trudged through my copy of 'The Silmarillion' - but I enjoyed the parody so much I'm now re-reading the original to find out what I missed!

Now that's a first...
