Unless you followed the magazine 'Heavy Metal' in its early days, you might be forgiven for missing the art of Arthur Suydam although it was only him and Rich Corben who made up the American contributors therein.
How to define his work is best by scanning the word within these pages. Suydam is at home with pen and ink as he is with a paintbrush and can do a turn from 'Alien' to 'Wind In The Willows' to super-heroes and his various humour pieces shows marked flexibility and diversity of style. His art is something that needs to be seriously looked at to be appreciated than just glancing through it. He's also full of surprises in that just when you think he works with a dark palate can then turn around and do paintings loaded with colour.
This book covers the range of Arthur Suydam's work from being allowed to paint or illustrated how and what he liked to commissioned pieces for adult and children's books. Certainly, you'd wish you could see more of his work, let alone see them issued in the UK. Even once read, there is always a need to have another browse to see if there was anything missed the first time. It's a great book to have for that rainy afternoon when you need something to inspire you or left on the table to show others as there's something here for everyone. When you get other highly respected artists praising his work then you know you're in good company.
