This is the concluding story of Sonea, a young street girl who has been initiated into the Magicians' Guild.

Following her instincts, Sonea has thus far managed to achieve great things with her training but nothing could prepare her for her next challenge. Dark days are coming for Imardin, the city protected by the skills of both soldiers and magicians.

Under the protection of the High Lord Akkarin, Sonea is undecided what his objectives are and she wavers between the forces of dark and light. Meanwhile, her childhood friend Cery has taken up a challenge to help out but how can he know which side he is on?

This final volume of the 'Magicians Guild Trilogy' falls into two parts and maintains its enthusiasm for its characters and a desire for completion. The end, when it comes, is fully satisfying with just a hint of a potential sequel. Canavan puts her characters through the mill and whilst it sometimes falls down on overall credibility, all praise to her continued passion of getting her story told.

It's not Shakespeare and this is not deathless prose but underneath it is Canavan having these adventures and pushing life to its limits even if it is between the pages of a book.

I enjoyed the trilogy and whilst I prefer my stories in one big volume, I was keen to read all three to complete the adventure. All three books do suffer from the sketchy creation of the alternate world but they work well enough at the simple level of an awfully big adventure and if reading is fun they it fulfils at least half its purpose.
