A Science Fiction fan who hasn't watched the re-made 'Battlestar Galactica' is missing the best Science Fiction TV show ever made and one that ranks up there even outside of the genre. The third season suffered for relying less on longer story arcs but still produced some iconic episodes and insightful allegory to the politics of our modern world.

Season Three opened with most of the humans that survived the Cylon attack in the original mini-series stuck on the planet New Caprica. The robotic Cylons had arrived and taken over, with Admiral Adama and the fleet badly under-staffed in hiding elsewhere. Quickly, things changed and through a number of arcs climbed towards a dramatic revelatory climax at the end of the season.

With Season Four starting in April and a feature-length episode 'Razor' recently premiered in the US, the associated material from Season Three is being released. Amongst them is the third Official Companion by David Bassom, which as before runs through the series and individual episodes, characters and staff of the show.

A warning before we go on. Anyone that hasn't watched Season Three should avoid reading this at any cost, because pretty much every major storyline and twist is revealed in the episode guide. For those that have seen the episodes, this is a great companion piece as the access to the thought processes behind the writing seems better than ever.

With such an ambitious and complex season, it's especially interesting to see the decisions made by Ron Moore and his team and the choices that were nearly made. It's also nice to see a section devoted to the mini 'webisode' content that was released prior to the season opener.

This editions seems to focus on the stories and writing process far more than before and that's a really good thing. The writing is what makes 'Battlestar Galactica' great and seeing the thought processes behind that is fascinating, especially when Ron Moore talks about episodes he felt didn't work as well as they might.

If you've not seen Season Three, don't read this unless you love spoilers. If you love the show, this will give you even more insight into the fantastic team creating one of the most iconic Science Fiction stories ever put on a screen.
