As I'm not into Role-Playing Games, the art of Paul Bonner has mostly passed me by. Those of you reading this who have more than a passing interest in the subject have probably come across his artwork, especially as he has worked for five different companies. His designs and paintings have graced Rackham's 'Confrontation' to Paradox's 'Mutant Chronicles' to Games Workshop 'Warhammer'. In all eight games have been graced by Bonner's brush and shown in this book, not to mention his black and white material for 'White Dwarf' magazine.
It's interesting how various editors compared his work to various other artists and miss out some comparison to American artist Rich Corben in the grotesque monster stakes. Bonner likes his creatures and RPG has allowed him to do intricate and very detailed painting that the small pictures accompanying this review don't really do justice to. The book does feature a lot of close-ups that show that even in detail, nothing has been left to a broadstroke.
I don't think you have to be interested in RPG to appreciate the art in this book. You'll be turning the pages wondering what war and creature Bonner will be showing next. Some of the designs obviously had some influence on the lead models used in the games although I have to confess I'm not sure which came first or whether there was some consideration when working on them. Saying that, Bonner also points out in the text that he is not into RPG himself much to the disdain of the fans. I can't see that as a disadvantage as he's paid to paint not play.
'The Art Of Paul Bonner' should please the RPGers in having a big book of his art and those of us who like fantasy art so this book has to be a winner.
