'Tis that time of year when a new batch of Terry Pratchett's Discworld spin-offs are released. To this end, we have the new 2008 calender. Unlike last year's, which was pictures taken from the Sky One's 'Hogfather' series, this more pleasingly is a range of paintings done by ten or so different artists. Each picture is based around Discworld.
The positive effect of this is that if you don't particularly like one month's picture, you've got a different artist to look forward to. So are, shall we say, the pictures any good? Highlights would be 'Errol And The Tower Of Art' by Jon Sullivan. A rich deeply detailed composition and I'm always a sucker for dragons. In stark contrast is the almost cel-shaded illustrated work of 'Going Postal' by David Frankland. 'Going Postal' illustration has appeared in previous Discworld calendar if I'm not mistaken.
'Wee Free Men' appear in the wonderful, colourful work 'She Ain't Heavy, She's Our Kelda' by Stephen Player. Bringing us up-to-date is a painting of Mr Fusspot from 'Making Money'. I think my favourite, which is for July, is going back to the first Discworld book, 'The Colour Of Magic' by Melvyn Grant. This captures Rincewind beautifully along with the luggage. Not as manic and detailed as Josh Kirby's illustration but beautifully rendered none the less.
In my eyes, this calendar is a lot more appealing than last year's effort. There are a couple of paintings I'm not so keen on. No, I'm not going to say which as whatever the case much work has gone into all of these paintings. There is plenty to go on here as the pictures draw from a wide range of 'Discworld' books and characters and are not limited to the more recent books. All in all, a calendar worth hanging on any Discworld fan's wall.
