Back when reading comicbooks was a real big part of my life, there was a distinction between the super-hero comics and the underground comix. You might sample them but it didn't necessarily follow you would like both. There were divisions of taste but not necessarily any outright hostility between the two groups, mostly cos they never converged. The latter, if anything at the time, had a rather spotty distribution, low print runs and being kept in an adult rack because of the content related to drugs and nudity. There were also few British ones not helping very much. Even back then, everyone knew of Bryan Talbot and his creation, Luthor Arkwright. I have to confess that I found Talbot's artwork rather messy and didn't really stray into them. Reading this book, even Talbot confesses he wasn't exactly prepared for a life of art by his teachers and could have done with a better grounding than he had.
This book, the first definitive look at Bryan Talbot's work in the business shows how much his art has developed over the years, becoming not only refined but better when he also painted as well. As with all media work, you have to be a survivor to keep going and it was inevitable that in 1983 that he would be pulled in to '2000 A.D.' to take over 'Nemesis The Warlock' which consequently gave him a more massive audience and from the look here, Talbot hasn't had much chance to look back since.
From his own text, you will read all about this from the man himself. Warts, henna and all. There's also a pile of sketches from the mid-90s when he was doing life-study classes. If anything, this book should be used as encouragement to any neo-artists out there reading this that if you put in the effort then your work will improve.
It's interesting that although Talbot could be regarded as mainstream now, he hasn't lost too much from his roots other than improved artwork. If you're a fan or just heard of Bryan Talbot then this book will fill in all the missing details. There is also an excellent checklist so you can locate all of his work, much of which has been reprinted over the years.
