Wonder Woman is keeping a low profile. Having been seen killing Maxwell Lord by breaking his neck, not only is she wanted for murder, the Amazon is somewhat of a pariah amongst the super-hero fraternity despite saving them by her actions. It's a shame really that she doesn't have her day in court and have a justifiable homicide but then the whole point is putting Wonder Woman in a fix that doesn't have a ready solution. It's a shame no one thought to put her on remand and see how she coped with other super-powered prisoners. Instead, she is now working for the Department Of Metahuman Affairs under her Diana Prince guise and been teamed up with Tom Tresser aka Nemesis. The protection of the new Maxi-Man goes wrong when he is killed by a falling piece of a switchback railing at a fun fair and they are re-assigned to capture Wonder Woman.

The series of stories here sees the occasional glimpses of Wonder Woman and the realisation that things aren't quite what they seem when as old foe, Circe, returns implicating the Amazon in other crimes before the return of her mother, Themysciria. She is leading an army of Amazons against America and the super-heroes join ranks to ward them off. At the end of the book, there's an Amazon stand-off which will have to wait for the next volume to see what happens next.

Am I giving away the ending saying that? Not really. As with any continuing stories, the journey is as much interest as the solution and it hasn't ended yet. Jodi Picoult seems to have had a lot of fun with this story and the artists involved have made it an experience worth savouring. There is a nice blend of humour and action. Saying that, I did notice an odd parallel to the old TV series. I mean, Diana Prince is still working for a military organisation and Tresser is practically falling into the old Steve Trevor role. Mind you, Tresser himself shows some interesting parallels to the Question in '52' in being a second-level character being brought near the bigger guys and into the action. Whether this is to make him expendable or to elevate his status remains to be seen. If you want to see what happened to Wonder Woman after the Infinite Crisis, then this book is for you.
