When the Babylon 5 series 'Crusade' was first shown in the UK, we had it in a somewhat jumbled order. We already heard that it was cancelled so just muddled along with what we had. With the DVD version, the thirteen episodes are presented more along the lines of the right order and if you watch the film 'A Call To Arms' first, you should understand it better this chronological order.

Creator Joe Straczynski's commentary fills the gaps by explaining that Crusade wasn't going to spend its entire five year run looking for a cure for the Drakh plague on Earth and would have moved onto other things in the second year. Indeed, these opening episodes are a parallel to the original series establishing the characters before making a cohesive story.

The one drawback with that is this isn't a space station but a starship. Granted it's a mile long but other than technomage Galen, the absence of other key crew members, not even a token appearance, when there is a crisis going on does make you wonder what they are doing when in other episodes they turn up for every emergency. Size in only material when looking at the size of the Excalibur starship. The living space is much smaller.

If anything, some of the episodes often made me wonder how urgent the threat to mankind actually was. It wasn't as though mankind was limited to one planet any more, especially when it had colonies elsewhere. Mankind would have survived. The danger to them to would have meant more than one ship should have been looking around just in case they were also on the Drakh's goodwill tour.

Then again, it's also a puzzle why the Rangers didn't seek out the Drakh as non-social invaders of the Interstellar Alliance and took them out for their actions. Then again, this is only thirteen episodes and no doubt Straczynski would have presented solutions if the rug hadn't been pulled out from him at short notice.

At most, 'Crusade' is a taster of what could have happened next but anything else is purely speculation. At least, Warner Bros released it on DVD and the quality still holds up, especially considering that its now eleven years old. I suspect this is more for the 'Babylon 5' completists. If you've picked up the other 'Babylon 5' material, then this one completes your set.
