This is more a plug for a re-release of the second book in the prolific Frederick Pohl's 1980 sequel to 'Gateway', the first of six books in 'The Heechee Saga' series. With a title like 'Beyond The Blue Event Horizon', you've just got to love it before you even get to the contents.
With 'Gateway', there was the discovery of an extinct alien species depot out in the asteroid belt and a lottery to take their automated ships out to collect alien artefacts that could make you either extremely wealthy or die in the attempt if the trip outran your supplies. Robin Broadbent does the trip and is wealthy but as the second book shows, he doesn't live happy ever after. He goes on a second trip with other prospectors and they discover a sentient spaceship less happy that they're on-board.
Over the Heechee books, Pohl developed credible likeable characters and scary prospects. He also doesn't go over old ground but builds up with each book. It's great to see this book out again but to get the full impetuous of it all, start with 'Gateway' because you'll be determined to see where it all leads.
