One thing 'Flames Of Herakleitos' isn't is Science Fiction. Well, not unless you have an alternative reality where magic is used to bring golems to life to take care of menial and labour jobs in a late-medieval world. The only connection to our reality is the occasional stealing of souls by body burning to transfer them across the void which links into the events of this story.

Anything else is built up on based on more recognisable standard plotting with people from our reality visiting theirs, political take-overs and resurrections, which is a form of deeper magic. Not much different from our reality really, except they don't have toilet paper. Saying too much about any of it could be considered as spoiler because it all works together to one aim to oust the bad guys.

This is author Bob Lock's first novel and I have to say he hasn't really learnt the art of pace. With most sentences the same length, the story becomes a slog and frankly, a little hypnotic in that you end up missing events because it doesn't sink into the mind very well. Pacing the sentence structure, let alone the paragraphs can instil all kinds of things, especially where events have a massive impact. If you don't read too many pages at a time, some of it will sink in better.

There are occasions where there's some interesting thoughts but if gets caught up in too much immense detail that hides the plot. After a while, you suddenly realise there's too many trees and not enough forest to hold them in. I mean, take the visitors from our world to theirs. They don't question their displacement nor have any desire to go home. They are just gung ho about the situation as if it's an every day occurrence.

As you might realise by now, I'm not a great lover of fantasy. Whether this will appeal to you is going to be a matter of personal taste. One can only hope author Bob Lock will treat this story as part of his learning curve and use it as a stepping stone to improve with his next book.
