Iris Wildthyme is a time-traveller and a loose cannon with more than a few loose screws but she's always willing to solve a mystery. An endlessly scatty remnant from the swinging sixties, you can sense that she is probably inappropriately dressed for a woman of advancing years, staggering from one bottle to the next and fighting intergalactic armies along the way.
A song on the radio reminds Iris of long ago and she and her companion, the loyal Panda, skip across the galaxy in her red London bus to Radio Yesterday. Here, she meets up with her long-lost love, Sam Gold, and Panda ends up on a very high shelf.
Dave reveals himself to be her abandoned husband, a fact that had escaped her increasingly Swiss-cheese memory. They drink, reminisce and whilst she's not concentrating, an alien race attempt to take over the galaxy again. Then there is Panda's problem with the high shelf. It's not easy being a fully articulated stuffed animal that has galaxy-saving duties.
Created by Paul Magrs, Iris is a dotty Aunty-dote to the occasionally stiff and pompous Doctor she claim to have travelled with. She's impossible not to warm to but beware of being her drinking companion. Panda is a superb character with traces of Noel Coward and Stewie from 'Family Guy'. He's a bear who punches above his weight and height.
Both Katy Manning and David Benson have a field day with the mad scripts. This one's written by Mark Michalowski and this is a chuckling listen. Looking forward to more of the Wildthyme travels.
