As the title of this CD should reveal, this is the original soundtrack of the four specials that compromised David Tennant’s last year tenure in ‘Doctor Who’ The first 52 minute CD comprises of the music from ‘The Next Doctor’, ‘Planet Of The Dead’ and ‘Waters Of Mars’. The second 64 minute CD is solely for the two part ‘The End Of Time’.
‘The Next Doctor’, as befitting a Christmas special’, is very jocular blended in with some more melancholy musical cues.
‘Planet Of The Dead’ starts off a little more funky surprisingly, considering the subject matter but then the introduction of a certain cat burglar needed a more Bond-like overture.
‘Waters Of Mars’ is probably the shortest piece on this CD with only four tracks. Whether it was the shortness or not, compared to the menace on the screen, this actually felt more subdued than menace.
Taken as a whole, these three specials blend as a complete whole.
The second CD is the complete ‘The End Of Time’ suite which is often raunchy and fast blending a more subtle underplay mixing the themes of the Doctor and Master. One should not forget the final track introduces the new Doctor, Matt Smith.
Listening to them as a collective, it is obvious one hand has composed them all. It’s hardly surprising that they are used as theatre performances this year. They wouldn’t be seen amiss as a proper orchestral piece rather than as a TV series soundtrack. Buying this pair of CDs, you can see for yourself.
I should point out that there is also a sixteen page booklet loaded with photos and comments about the soundtrack which should please the Who fans amongst us. A little goodie for you to while away a couple hours in musical appreciation.
