With only five specials in the fifth and last year of actor David Tennant’s tenure in ‘Doctor Who’, it would be inevitable that ‘End Of Ten’ would be a lighter read than the previous volumes. That doesn’t mean this book isn’t light on facts or statistics, not to mention an examination of Russell T. Davies’ tenure on ‘Doctor Who’ as a whole with some good insights. Writer Stephen Walker’s criticisms on the Doctor’s seemingly invulnerability to falls that would have caused a regeneration voices my own concern with such things as well as drawing out of seeing everyone before the change. I also agree with his comments that it would have been possible to have run a full season rather than four specials as well. Today’s viewers do have a different expectation compared to when we were young so let’s hope new show-runner Steven Moffatt might take that into account. Saying that, considering that there were two production of ‘Who’ being done at the same time, it could also have been about budgets and available sets as well.

I would have thought the plot of ‘Planet Of The Dead’ owed a lot more to the film ‘Pitch Black’ then noted in this book. Likewise, with ‘The Waters Of Mars’, I think Walker misses the fact that the Doctor has an innate feeling about what can and cannot be changed in the timestream. The Time Lord might have an encyclopaedic knowledge with a specialist subject in humans but he’s interfered, sorry helped, on alien worlds as well so it’s a feeling of the static points in time more than knowing why. Again, Walker voices a better solution for the rescued humans in not taking them back to Earth to ensure history was maintained as I thought when I saw the story but Davies obviously wanted to show there was a consequence with playing with time.

It’s interesting that there is a slight difference, and not just in the extended credits, between the television and DVD releases. If you’re into all the viewing figures and so forth then you’ll be very happy. Weirdly, the HD channels aren’t actually used for figures for numbers by the BBC. Remember that if you suddenly wonder why Who numbers seemed to have dropped in the future.

A useful resource and can’t wait to see what Stephen Walker has to say about the new chap which should be out early next year. In the meantime, read this one and astound your pals with your acquired knowledge.
