If you've ever wondered what the condensed complete Sherlock Holmes sounds like you may well be interested in this marvellous treasure of a play. Roger Llewellyn has been performing this, 'The Last Act', as a one-man show and this audio offers a whistle-stop tour of the character that has fascinated readers, TV viewers and movie-goers for many years.
'The Last Act' opens as Holmes returns to his rooms after attending the funeral of his great friend, Watson. He reflects on the adventures they shared, conscious that he cannot frame the words the way his old companion could when writing up their escapades. Holmes reprises all the familiar stories including the famous hound, the woman Irene Adler, and his nemesis, Professor Moriaty. He also contemplates the secrets he kept from Watson and his own dark addictions.
If you've never read any Sherlock Holmes, this is a perfect starter which offers you the chance to experience the gothic, gritty darkness. I found the play intriguing and thoroughly enjoyed it on its first run-through and again Llewellyn invests his whole heart into this spirited performance and I would certainly like to see him perform it in the theatre as well. As it gets darker, we can follow Holmes into his own personal Hell. I have never been very interested in Holmes as a character but this version shows how much can be achieved by exploring the traits that over the years we have taken for granted.
There are two more Sherlock Holmes Audios to follow, another with Llewellyn called 'The Death And Life' and the final one with Nick Briggs reprising his own stage role in 'Holmes And The Ripper'. With the new Guy Ritchie film also out now, it seems the public has many more years to spend with this enduring character.
