Until now, zombies haven't been well served by the news media, but that's now changed. 'The Zombie Times' is for zombies and their friends across the UK and pulls together all sorts of announcements and competitions related to zombies and their undead kin. From the obvious stuff like book and film reviews through to the more hands-on practical things like zombie make-up artists and zombie charity events, it's all here.
One of the nice things about the PDF format used for 'The Zombie Times' is that hyperlinks can be added with ease. At the end of each feature are working e-mail addresses and website links that open up your e-mail client or web browser as required. Mostly these worked fine but, slightly embarrassingly perhaps, the link to the competition page didn't work, lacking the '.html' bit at the end of the embedded link.
The magazine is easy to read on a computer screen and renders well in both Acrobat and (on this reviewer's Mac) Apple's own Preview PDF reader. There's a contents list on page 3 for some reason rather than at the front, but apart from that, page layout is attractive and easy to follow.
Most of the features are short, a couple of hundred words at most and tend towards the press release and free publicity end of things rather than in-depth editorials but, for this sort of hobby, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Most of the people reading 'The Zombie Times' will be very interested in precisely the types of events announced here so, on that score, the magazine does rather well.
But with that said, it'd be nice to see one or two deeper pieces that tackled the artistic, historical or cultural nuances of this popular horror genre. If nothing else, film reviews and retrospectives would make a nice supplement to announcements of upcoming film and DVD releases. Likewise, rather than just featuring make-up artists and their work, hands-on tutorials that showed people who do their own zombie make-up could be rather fun.
Taken on its own merits, though, 'The Zombie Times' is a fun little read, all 18 pages of it. 'The Zombie Times' is free and delivered four times a year by e-mail. To sign up, all you need to do is go to the subscription page on the www.terror4fun.com
