This comic makes me hate every other comic out there. Why? Because it is so damn good. It’s painfully perfect.

Following the reclusive, positively mental journalist Spider Jerusalem as he returns to the city after a five year self-exile, ‘Transmetropolitan’ is a powerful, satirical romp that makes fun of everything that America and to a certain extent the world takes seriously.

Spider is a journalist who knows what he likes, what he cares about and to hell with everyone else. Called out of his drug-filled murderous exile by his publisher as he is still due them two books, he finds himself back in his hated home city. This is one of the stars of this book, it looks like ‘Blade Runner’ on every hallucinogenic drug the world has to offer. There is a evanescent amount of colour and an infinite amount of detail.

I must say this, Darick Robertson is one of the best artists in the medium. With this and ‘The Boys’, it is also a reason to hate everything else. He is outstanding.

Written by Warren Ellis, the man behind ‘Aetheric Mechanics’, ‘Ignition City’, ‘Fell’ and ‘Astonishing X-Men’, this is a story that has to be told. It’s a cyberpunk version of Hunter S Thompson’s marvellous ‘Fear And Loathing On The Campaign Trail ’73’ crossed with ‘The Thick Of It’. It’s a comic book for everyone and it’s also down right hilarious.

Spider also meets the president again, a hyper-conservative who is aptly named The Beast. A running arc throughout the series must be the upcoming election which The Beast is running for. He then makes the president defecate himself. It also has a masterful scene in which Spider sits atop a strip club, surrounded by off-duty strippers and writes his article on the riot that is going on in the streets below. It is wonderful.

As a comicbook, this is outstanding. As literature, it is outstanding. As good old-fashioned fun, it excels. This book is cheeky, it’s rude and exaggeration blown up a thousand times. It is quite simply, perfect. Yes, I’ve used that word twice. Yes, I mean it.
