Long ago and far away, we all went to Moonbase Alpha. It didn’t last for long, only two seasons on a commercial channel in the UK. For some, it has never gone away and this book is part of the on-going mission to keep the flame alive.
The life of the TV series ‘Space: 1999’ was very definitely split into years 1 and 2 and a debating point with fans. The departure of the producer Sylvia Anderson also marked a departure in the treatment of the series.
This book offers a comprehensive look at the whole of the show. The opening chapter of each section offers an overview of each season and its relative merits. Following that, each episode is attacked with great enthusiasm. The rundown gives full cast and credits including original transmission dates. Even originally un-credited cast are put in their rightful place. There is then a short plot resume followed by quotes and details about the music. The commentary section includes quotes from cast and production members including writers. There is, of course, a bloopers section which gives you something to look for when watching. Observations are points of note about the production which fill in some background. At the end of all this, there is a review and rating for each episode which offers a personal view with which you may agree or disagree.
Overall, this is a splendid book for lovers of both trivia and the series itself. Best held in one hand as you go through in each episode it is the DVD extras writ large.
