The sub-title for this book is ‘Drawing And Composition For Visual Storytellers’ which should make sense of the main title, ‘Framed Ink’, by Marcos Mateu-Mestre. As the designs in this book are essentially black ink and grey tone, it wouldn’t reproduce well when shrunk to our normal rendition size.

This book is of primarily use for those people who have enough artistic skill to move into storyboard, animation and comicbook explaining what you need to know to get the best out of a scene to make it effective when telling a story. It would also be of advantage for any scriptwriter, especially comicbook, to understand the technical information that they hand their artists as to what they want to achieve with their story. Whether that would be seen as infringing on their territory is debatable but it might sort out the problem of how much detail is given for each panel.

In many respects, much of this book is familiar ground to me. Brought up on comicbooks, even written a chapter for a How To book and taught a novice but now pro-artist to make the most of his work means I probably know what I am looking at. Mateu-Mestre stays well within the confines of non-super-hero material so if you’re looking for tips on that, then there are plenty of other books on the market that will cater for your needs. What is shown here is the importance of taking into account everything from the time of day to the weather in setting up a scene. Then there is character placement to and how to use it to direct the reader to look in a particular direction. This is all the meat and bones stuff that the artist has to know as well as the action material.

The pros no doubt already know what is in this book but if you want to develop these skills, this book will give you an excellent grounding.
