And now for something completely different. The Drama Showcase is not about ‘Doctor Who’. Not directly anyway. These productions have come about because of the connections between the talented actors who happen to perform ‘Doctor Who’ audios for Big Finish.

‘Not a Well Woman’ is written and performed by Katy Manning. This is a one woman show original developed for the stage and slightly revised for this audio version.

Pansy is a woman who doesn’t see the world the way we do. Her myopic vision and close-up persistence could be the model for a Spec Savers advert. She launches into life in a spectacular way, truly an innocent abroad who offers herself as an experiment in life.

Opening in Los Angeles, Pansy recounts her life as she sees it, a glorious cascade of consciousness that starts to reveal just what has happened to her over the years of her chequered existence. Pansy rushes through life gasping like a goldfish, lurching from past to present and back again. It’s a tale of highs, lows, joys and pain. It will make you laugh and cry and amazing as this audio is, I would imagine the live performance to be a three-handkerchief job.

Katy Manning performs all the parts and moves us easily between the different decades and the plane journey from hell is just one excellent element of this. One listen and you will want to listen again it is a great use of the medium and the claustrophobic nature of the audio intensifies this emotional story.
