I did wonder why we were sent this particular book, ‘Zoo Babies’ by Andrew Bleiman and Chris Eastland, as it isn’t really in our remit. Well, all right, if you want to distract your sprogs with cute baby animals while you get on with the serious stuff of reading or watching Science Fiction and its grey cousins, fantasy and horror, then yes, buy immediately. However, when I read the introduction and that there is a donation from the publishers every time a copy of the book is bought to the AZA’s Conservation Endowment Fund which is used to breed animals that who have their wild habitat destroyed and depend on zoo breeding programs to ensure their survival, then this makes for a decent charitable cause.
The one hundred and one baby animals shown within this photobook are the results of such endeavours with information on each critter so apart from you saying so many of them look cute, this is also a reminder that all of these animals facing rarity to extinction depend on zoos to keep their species alive. Zoos have moved away from just showing animals in cages and this is probably one of the better things they do.
There’s also a lot of trivia info about the animals, like hyenas are closer to cats than dogs and Koala bears have fingerprints.
If you want to donate and ensure you have a book for your sprogs to read then this book serves both purposes. If you need samples of baby animals for any art practice you might be doing then this book is also useful.
