Charles Delaware is in a sanatorium. He has had a torrid life, not least his contact with the Collins family of Collinsport. This is ‘Dark Shadows’ and Charles Delaware is trapped in the murky depths of melodrama.

Reprising his role as the painter, Roger Davis returns to the world of ‘Dark Shadows’ in ‘The Blind Painter’. Alone and desperate, Charles Delaware continues to paint whilst living under his curse as he cannot see his creations. One day he has a visitor, a nurse. She wants to hear his story and she wants him to paint her.

As he begins the story, Charles returns to his early life as a struggling painter. Starving in his rooms, no one is interested in his daubings. Then he meets a beautiful woman who inspires him and soon Charles Delaware is the talk of the town but there is a price to be paid for his talent and Eloise Verinder returns to take her payment.

With Nicola Bryant as the second actor in this, we have an enhanced audio story. As a two-hander it works well as the story passes between the two characters. Most of the story is in the telling as there are elements of many different plots here. Although some might feel familiar, it has a freshness and the authenticity of the actors makes it a good listen.

Even if there are no new plots in the world there is always room for a good old yarn based on many that have gone before it. This is another ‘Dark Shadows’ audio that is very enjoyable. The world may be a wacky one but it follows its own internal logic and I have yet to be disappointed by it.

The production values are high and the one thing missing is the usual extras that come with other Big Finish productions. I would love to hear some interviews and memories from these original cast members. I hope there will be some more full cast audios in the future and that this element can be incorporated.
