The spring issue of ‘Spaceship Away’ is out and oddly the articles are going to interest the Dan Dare fans more than the strips, mostly because they focus on versions of our favourite spaceman some if not most of us haven’t really heard about. Writer Phil Harbottle reveals the lost 1950s Radio Luxembourg quarter of an hour daily five year radio shop of Dan Dare between 1951-56. All that are left are memories since the recordings were lost but a fascinating insight. Keeping to this theme, there was also a BBC 1990 radio series of Dan Dare and Rod Barzilay explores this subject.
‘Dan Dare: The Musical’ I do have a vague memory of. On stage in 2003 in South Shields, there is an interview by Jeremy Briggs with its writer, Tom Kelly, about its creation. Added to this is John Freeman’s interview with writer John Ainsworth about the proposed Dan Dare audio adventures that didn’t get beyond the pilot stage which fail through by lack of funding.
Lest we forget, there are two Dan Dare strips, one of which reaches a conclusion. Jet Morgan in ‘Shadow Over Britain’ with some outer space shenanigans. Its creator, Bruce Cornwell, recently passed away at the tender age of 91. The full colour ‘Garth’ strip. ‘Finality Factor’ continues apace if not in space. Although I think that Martin Asbury’s art gets a little rubbery occasionally, it’s interesting seeing how Tim Booth has coloured it.
There’s plenty here to keep all you Dan Dare fans happy and if you haven’t discovered this magazine yet, the text features alone should have you wanting to come back for more.
