a short story by: GF Willmetts.

Great news, sir. After you being such a long time on our euthanasia waiting list, we can now fit you in.

Oh, you’re not feeling so suicidal any more? I’m sorry to hear that.

I take it you have no terminal diseases neither? That’s a shame.

You don’t just want to use the position because it’s there now?

I can see having a wife and two children might make that an encumbrance and one really doesn’t know where whether the insurance company will pay out in such circumstances. I should point out, sir, that I can supply you with a list of approved insurance companies who would not see that as a problem. I can even supply you with a list of Cayman or Swiss banks that can accommodate nest eggs for your family without too many questions.

Still not interested. I can appreciate the problem and you do realise you are likely to lose your deposit. Is there any member of your family or friends that you think would be suitable for a transfer. This would allow a return of your deposit from them and they take your position.

I’m sorry, sir, this has to be voluntary. You can not send your mother-in-law without her knowing where she is going. The program works best with people with terminal illnesses or suicidal tendencies.

Is there anything else I can offer? Let me check the list. There is one other clause. We normally use this for clients in remission. We could put you at the back of the queue and consult with you at a later date.

How long would that be? That’s hard to say, sir. Euthanasia isn’t quite what it used to be. These days people often select bad weather areas or even terrorists spots, usually for that once in a life-time experience. We can even help you select such places, although this has nothing to do with our previous arrangement.

I’ll contact you again in six weeks.

Your best of health, sir.

End
