In recent months, it's been practically
impossible to avoid reading comments about this film, the sequel to
'The Matrix'. As the middle film of a trilogy, 'Reloaded' was bound
to get a lot of flak before the answers in the third film.
Although
it isn't disclosed, a few months must have passed between the two films. Neo and
Trinity are now in a happy relationship although the Chosen One is beset by nightmares
where his girl-friend is killed in the Matrix.
With
their vehicles ordered back to Zion, the home base, to fight against
the Matrix's defences burrowing down to reclaim them, Morphius orders
one of the fleet to stay behind to await for their call from Oracle.
In Zion, it is a case of
the leaders telling the military leader what action is needed to be carried out
and the latter favour Morphius that they must contact the Oracle and unravel the
Matrix from the inside. The Matrix itself hasn't been standing still
and has upgraded Smith sufficiently that he can clone himself into an army to
take on Neo as well as take over any other body in cyberspace. There is also a
pair of albino assassins in the mix with a similar objective. Although
there are several set piece battles throughout the film, 'Reloaded' happily moves
along. In some respects, although it's obvious the money is on the screen, I can't
help but feel there's been a bit of an overkill with the number of combat scenes.
Although cleverly staged, it's a pity that a bit more thought hadn't been spent
on showing brain is as important as brawn within the cyberspace Matrix. In
many respects, I think I'm going to have to leave an open verdict on this film
until the third is released in November which means the video won't be out until
the new year. If you want to read what my instincts say then you need to read
one of my less serious thoughts at the end of the editorial.
