This is the soundtrack to the second re-make of 'The Invasion Of The Body Snatchers' directed by Philip Kaufman. He recruited jazz pianist Denny Zeitlin largely because actor Donald Sutherland was originally going to be playing a jazz musician in the film. Ultimately, Sutherland's character, as we should all know if you saw the movie, became a health inspector instead. In retrospect, that was probably a good move. Would a jazz musician see any difference in people playing in a club? Zeitlin was kept on and asked to do a less jazz inclined soundtrack but using his other career as a psychiatrist to ensure the beats of the music built on and developed the paranoia when the pods took over.

I have to confess not to hearing Zeitlin in his more jazz-like environment but I think I'll see what's out there sometime, if for no other reason than to compare to this excellent CD. You certainly don't have to be familiar with the film to enjoy the 12 tracks here which also includes the melancholic version of 'Amazing Grace' from towards the ending. I came away from this with a sharp reminder that I was long over-due to watch this film again. The tracks evoke a range of moods that will have you captivated and the very final track will remind you what they were all running from.

There is also about a 35 minute interview with composer Zeitlin discussing his time working on the soundtrack and why he probably won't do so again as he was working for 20 hour days for several weeks to meet the deadline. His anecdotes give a real insight to what it was like and how he felt as a first time film track composer.

Topping on this CD cake is the 16 page colour booklet with lots of film photos and detailed plot, as well as interviews with Kaufman and Zeitlin If I have to be critical, I just wish they'd also included a complete cast list with parts played so as to provide a complete archive for the film to go along with the shots of the various cinema posters. That's only a minor quibble.

Do check out Perseverance Records website though for music samples. This company looks like they are going to work their way through a lot of interesting SF films and deserve your support.
