Another SF series that you can lay your hands on cheaply if you know where to look. Oddly enough, the UK High Street Smiths in April as part of a deal of buying two for the price of one. Season Two review will follow when I finish watching them.
'Dark Angel' is Max, short for Maximum (played by Jessica Alba), who was part of Manicore's super-soldier project to create genetically modified humans that also carried animal DNA for extra abilities. In Max's case, enhanced strength, speed and senses and goes on heat a couple times of year. [I did wonder if Jim Cameron ever came across my story, 'Taming Miss Oberon' that was on this website a few years before 'Dark Angel' but there's sufficient differences probably to say no.]
A dozen of these X-5 adolescents escape from the Manicore Compound after becoming fed up with their treatment and go to ground. Max's journey over the years gets her to Seattle where she becomes a courier for Jam Pony and develops friends amongst them. It also gives her the freedom to travel around the sectors of Seattle which is rather handy because Max uses her abilities as a burglar at night. The funds she makes is to pay for a private detective to track down the other X-5s who escaped.
A few years previously, there was'The Pulse' which destroyed some computer technology and a lot of datafiles and the US is slowly re-building under the influence of criminal and corrupt elements. Into this mix is 'Eyes Only', a pirate broadcaster who stays on cable TV long enough to tell the truth of what is going on from the contacts he has made.
On a burglary, Max discovers Logan Kale (played by Michael Weatherley), the man behind Eyes Only, and they develop a relationship of her helping him while he tracks down her missing friends. It is from here that all the adventures in this first season develop, especially as Manicore themselves, led by Lydekker (played by the appropriately names John Savage), are still actively out to re-capture Max and her friends.
The extras are all on the sixth disk with interviews with the key cast and creators which appears to have been recorded at the start of the season one. No big insights but it is, where the actors are concerned, interesting to see them as themselves.
What is interesting about this series created by Jim Cameron and Charles Eglee is the continual re-inventing as the series progresses with certain alliances changing as more information comes to the fore. A dark and moody series with likeable characters and ably performed actors and actresses. It's a shame the series never lasted beyond its second season only to see what they would have done next.
