This is the second and final season of the Jim Cameron and Charles Eglee co-produced US TV series 'Dark Angel' with a lot of stakes changed. Despite being shot and given a heart transplant by Manicore and forced under their control, Max succeeds in not only escaping but going back and freeing the other Transgenics before destroying their base. This somewhat changes the MO for the series and Lyedekker is phased out as an older menace rears its head with a small band of beings who have been bred to be superior wanting to oust the genetically spliced humans from their turf. Max also finds herself surrounded with a couple new although not entirely friends in the form of Alec - a clone of Ben who was killed in the first season and out to look after number one - and Joshua - the first transgenic who facially is more dog than man. Kudos to Kevin Durand for playing and bringing to life Joshua in such an energetic, sensitive way.

On the love front, Max finds herself infected with a life-threatening disease designed to target only one person, Logan Kale aka Eyes Only himself. Just a touch of flesh and he's in serious need of medical attention. Max also has to contend with keeping some transgenics out of trouble and rescuing others as White, who is running the covert assassination programme who are systematically killing them off. In many ways, this is shown as a developing threat than something that just peters out or changes side.

If anything, this second season is a lot more violent than the first and all the stakes are raised so high than had this moved to a third season, this reviewer would be wondering where it could go without being a come down. I can't really see Max being a stateswoman with her attitude although she is quite able in getting things done. Maybe they would have explored just what was so important about her genetic code and how some sort of peace might have been achieved with the normal humans.

Having said that, this is a rather dark noir type series that will have you supporting the suppressed minority with a realisation that violence isn't necessarily the answer to all your problems. As a cult classic, you'll also probably turn to it for re-runs on an annual basis which will enforce its cult status.

There is one significant extra with the final DVD: 'Seattle Ain't What It Used To Be' where explanations abound as to how the effects were created, especially as to what was real and what was CGI which will also end up you all giving this a second look and probably where a lot of the budget actually went in the end.

If you like your SF dark and violence with a lot of dashing of character development then its worth giving both seasons of 'Dark Angel' a try.
