Back in September 2004, my review of the French release of this film based on the female icon character Modesty Blaise wondered when we would have a non-subtitled version. Now out in Region One only, we do indeed have 'My Name Is Modesty' in all its glory. Even remarkable for this film is that despite a short 18 days production schedule it is lavishly made, well-scripted and a joy to watch. It has two audio commentaries from the director and producer as well as the writers together with a 50 minute interview with author Peter O'Donnell. There is also an equally long interview with Quintin Tarantino and director Scott Spigel about their involvement in the film plus a glossary of all the Modesty Blaise newspaper strips that you really need to use a computer to look at than a TV screen. Of course, it also helps if you have a multi-regional DVD player to appreciate this remarkable film if you, like me, live in Region 2 land but these devices are cheap these days.

Some interesting tit-bits have come out of all the extras this time. 'My Name Is Modesty' is Miramax' test film to see if they are up to the job of producing feature-length Modesty Blaise films and what better way to go than look at her origins as a story. As the writers were prone to say in their audio-commentary, much of it was covered in snippets in O'Donnell's books and they just brought it together without much desire to tamper with it, feeling the original integrity was what make the character so successful. Miramax and indeed co-producer Tarantino also agreed with this and there was no interference in getting this film made. If all low budget films were as good as this I'd happily watch them make more in this line. The film was made in 2002 and its US release is probably to spur the time when they make a full feature film. As I presume I've now spiked your interest here, I hope you'll go out and buy this DVD before it sells out.
