 The Wicker Man (Frank's Take)
01/10/2006. Yikes! Talking about an unintentional comedy of errors, says Frank. Writer-director Neil LaBute's meandering and goofy-minded horror/suspense thriller The Wicker Man will garner more spontaneous chuckles than an overactive feather tickling a sensitive underarm. This doesn't bode very well for a moody piece that's supposed to be intriguing in its macabre skin.

01/10/2005. This is another joyously morbid fairy tale from Tim Burton. A nebbish makes a fatal mistake and accidentally weds a zombie. These mixed marriages - one living and one dead - never really last. But while this one does our hapless hero gets to meet the underworld society of the dead. The mock morbidity is a lot of fun, and it all comes to a heart-warming ending.

 TMNT: Frank's take
01/04/2007. Remember in the heyday (read: early 90's) when the pizza-swilling, butt-kicking roguish reptiles were all the rage? One couldn't even hide in their shell without being exposed to the progressive propaganda that was the Renaissance-named rascals with the nifty ninja reflexes in the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael and Donatello. The Mutant Ninja Turtles were the ultimate bomb for the kiddies and an absolute guilty pleasure for the grown-ups. So then why are the new and improved crime-fighting cretins seemingly misplaced in the revved-up animated actioner TMNT?

01/10/2006. As is a sort of a yearly tradition for Mark to cover the film studio presentation of upcoming films given at the World Science Fiction Convention. These presentations are a custom that goes back at least as far as MidAmericon in 1976 when a minor filmmaker, George Lucas, showed his designs for his upcoming film, Star Wars. Presentations of upcoming films for the Worldcon became common for a while but are now a dying tradition.

01/04/2005. A man awakes from a coma to find his world changed and things no longer making sense. A film this unpleasant should at least be absorbing. This one is a hard film to get into and it really does not reward that effort.
