Dark Shadows (Frank's take)
1/06/2012. The Tim Burton-Johnny Depp celluloid collaboration has been a reliable train chugging along the creative tracks throughout the years. The derailment in 2012: the callow costume creepfest Dark Shadows. Burton has always been a peculiar bird with bizarre creativity grounded in cutting edge imagination.

Dark Skies The Complete Series
1/12/2010. Dark Skies: The Complete Series DVD boxset. pub: MediumRare Entertainment B003WL825O. 6 DVDs 892 minutes 18 episodes. Price: GBP39.99 (UK).

Darkness Falls
01/03/2003. Darkness Falls is the latest slight and extraneous scarefest to hit the big screen in dull, meaningless fashion. Director Jonathan Liebesman helms a ridiculously familiar and arbitrary cheesy horror tale that doesn't effectively challenge the simple conventions of the fright genre.

Dawn of the Dead
01/05/2004. Frank sits down to watch Zack Snyder's surprisingly winning remake of the flesh-eating fable Dawn of the Dead.

Dead Birds: Mark's Take
06/12/2004. About the only thing that is original and unfamiliar about this house of horrors horror film is that it is set during the Civil War.

Dead Of Night (The Ealing Studios Collection - 1946)

Price: £12.99 although it can be got for just under £ 5.00 if you know where to look (UK). stars: Michael Redgrave, Mervyn Johns, Googie Withers, Basil Radford, Nouton Wayne, Sally Ann Howes, Rowland Culver and Frederick Valk.

Dead Snow (Mark's take)
01/07/2009. A week long Easter vacation visit to a remote cabin in the mountains turns into a horror for eight young medical students, finds our Mark. Following the inspiration of Sam Raimi films Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola does his own horror film of something nasty out in the woods. This is very much by-the-numbers horror film making. It is not at all bad, but it has little that is fresh and new.

Defendor (2010)
01/11/2010. region 2 DVD: pub: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment B003JQK86I. 1 DVD with extras. Price: GBP 13.99 (UK)) stars: Woody Harrelson.

Despicable Me: Mark's take
01/08/2010. Gru, a super-villain of the James Bond film type, goes into competition with another super-villain, Vector. Gru needs three little girls from a local foundling home to penetrate Vector's stronghold. But Gru does not count on the power of three cute little girls to transform his life. Pixar raised the bar even higher for digital animation films with Toy Story 3 and it is well out of reach for Illumination Entertainment, the producers of Despicable Me.

District 9: Mark's take
01/09/2009. Peter Jackson produced this film directed by Neill Blomkamp. When a spaceship brings a large load of alien refugees to South Africa, racism becomes three-sided. A government functionary charged with relocating the refugee camp finds himself more personally involved in the conflict than he expected. Blomkamp's and Terri Tatchell's script asks us to dissect racism and understand what exactly the rules are. While the film is asking difficult questions, it is a first rank piece of science fiction. When it starts to answer those questions in the easiest and most predictable ways the film becomes just another loud summer action film.

Disturbia: Frank's take
01/06/2007. We'll just have to face certain facts that a majority of contemporary films today will always have that reminiscence factor when "borrowing" the stimulating theme from other previously proven flicks, finds Frank. For filmmaker D.J. Caruso's horror/suspense piece Disturbia, this cinematic sentiment is certainly true. Suitably giddy with its horror movie platitudes aimed at mocking the facade of suburban hysteria, Caruso's Disturbia percolates effectively within its defined raucous rhythms.

Doctor Who: Beneath The Surface boxset
01/03/2010. region 2 DVD: pub: BBC 2438. Price: about £12.00 (UK) if you know where to look) I have to confess that I tend to be a little cautious when it comes to buying boxsets that aren't consecutive stories. On the other hand, it's difficult to get the three stories below separately now and at about £4 each, makes this a decent bargain. You could always argue that only as a boxset would you seriously consider buying 'Warriors Of The Deep'?! That aside, lets look at each of the stories.

Doom (Frank's Take)
01/12/2005. The movie's obvious title says it all, says Frank, because some audiences will feel doomed when enduring this tedious ultra-synthetic rush ride that dares to emulate the frightening frivolity of the 1986 blockbuster Aliens.

Doppelgänger and Silliness
01/06/2009. There is, says Mark, an old (well now it's old: from 1969) British science fiction movie called Doppelgänger. At the time it was filmed the makers assumed that that name would mean nothing to most Yanks so for audiences on this side of the pond it was called Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun. A doppelgänger is a thing from German folklore. It is an identical double to its victim and it is or our plane to replace its original.

Dr. Phibes Rises Again - composed and conducted by John Gale
01/05/2005. CD: Perseverance PRD 002. 45 minutes. Price: $21.95 or $17.00 off their website.

Dracula (2006): Mark's take
01/03/2007. This may well be the least faithful and poorest adaptation of a novel ever to appear on America's Masterpiece Theater, says Mark. There is very little of the novel in this production and what is there is twisted. Victorians who thought there was little that could be done to make this story less subtle than it already was would be amazed to find how crudely it could be adapted. Nevertheless, I realized watching it that there was a way for the viewer to make it a much more pleasurable experience.

Drag Me To Hell (Mark's take)
01/07/2009. A bank loan officer refuses a loan extension to a woman of Gypsy origin. In return, the officer is cursed. The effects of the curse are horrifying and frequently revolting. Were this a new story written by Sam Raimi and his elder brother Ivan it would have been a better piece of horror. The effects and the action are all Raimi, but the story is cobbled together from familiar pieces. Largely this is a high-octane version of M. R. James's Casting the Runes with equal parts of shock and humour.

Dragonball: Evolution (Frank's Take)
01/05/2009. So here we go again sighs our Frank... another woefully generic actioner borrowing its inspiration from a popular television series (Dragonball Z) and/or highly regarded video game of the same name. Still, how could the immensely flashy and kinetic Dragonball: Evolution go so wrong when it has also been translated into best-selling graphic novels? After all, it is derived from the desired Japanese manga created by Akira Toriyama? Well gang, let us count the ways...shall we?

Dragonfly won't Fly
01/10/2002. There's a sound reason for swatting away the preposterous "Dragonfly", Kevin Costner's latest sappy supernatural romantic thriller. Frank's just the man to tell you what it is.

Drakula Istanbul'da (Dracula in Istanbul): Mark's take
01/03/2007. This has been a very rare film, muses Mark, but it seems to be becoming more readily available. This is not a sequel to, but a simplification of Bram Stoker's novel. It just replaces the London backdrop with Istanbul and sets the story in the year of its production, 1953. The film has some nice bits on a tight budget, but turning the Mina character into an alluring stage dancer somehow cheapens the story. Atif Kaptan makes what seems a lacklustre Dracula, but perhaps if I knew Turkish it might have been more impressive.

Drive Angry (Frank's take)
01/03/2011. Who’s your daddy? Better yet…who’s your dead and deranged daddy? In this case it’s a long-haired and scruffy-looking Nicholas Cage as an avenging hellcat set on evening the score when his loved ones are periled in the suspenseful yet cockeyed actioner Drive Angry 3D.
