Chesley Turns 18

The 18th Annual Chesley Awards for SFF art have been announced at TorCon III, the 61st World Science Fiction Convention.

The ASFA have just announced the 18th annual Chesley Awards (the Mistress of Ceremonies was Sandra Lira). This year, there were twelve standard award categories. The winners for each category are listed below.

Artistic Achievement
Sponsored in Memoriam of Ron Walotsky, presented by Esther Friesner was awarded to: Tom Kidd

Best Cover Illustration - Hardback Book
Presented by Kevin Murphy of Meisha Merlin was awarded to: Todd Lockwood for "The Thousand Orcs", book by R.A. Salvatore (WotC, October '02)

Best Cover Illustration - Paperback Book
Sponsored by Jim Baen and presented by Teresa Patterson was awarded to: Tristan Elwell for "Briar Rose", book by Jane Yolen, (TOR/Starscape Editions, March '02)

Best Art Director
Presented by Paul Barnett, was awarded to Irene Gallo for TOR Books

Best Cover Illustration - Magazine
Presented by Dave Switzer of Challenging Destiny Magazine, was awarded to: Todd Lockwood for Dragon Magazine #302, December '02

Best Monochrome Work - Unpublished
Sponsored by "The Morton Girls," presented by jan howard finder, was awarded to: Maurizio Manzieri for "The Skimmer's Lagoon"

Best Colour Work - Unpublished
Sponsored by the Morton Girls, presented by Elizabeth Humphreys, President ASFA, was awarded to: Richard Hescox for "The Storm"

Best Three-Dimensional Art
Presented by Elizabeth Klein Lebbink, was awarded to: Kim Graham for "Con Jose Dragon "

Best interior Illustration
Presented by Suzanne Ribinson and Sandi Campney, was awarded to: Scott Gustafson for "Classic Fairy Tales ", book by Scott Gustafson (Greenwich Workshop/ Hallmark, October '02)

Best Product Illustration
Presented by Pamela D. Scoville, was awarded to: Dean Morrissey for "The Light Ship" (Fine Art Print for The Greenwich Workshop April '02)

Best Gaming Related Illustration
Presented by Bill Fawcett, was awarded to; Todd Lockwood for "Spider Queen " ("Forgotten Realms" supplement for "City of the Spider Queeen", Wizards of the Coast, '02)

Contribution to ASFA
Presented by Teresa Patterson, was awarded to: Geoff Surrette for design and management of the ASFA Website

This year's sponsors include Baen Books, The Morton Girls, WoodLyn Library, and In Memoriam Ron Walotsky.

For those that not in the fan loop, it's The Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists - a non-profit organisation of SFF-minded professional and amateur artists, art directors, agents, publishers, and other art professionals - which give out the gongs for the annual Chesley Awards.

Named after the space artist Chesley Bonestell, the awards were created in 1985 to bring about recognition to deserving artists and art professionals in the science fiction and fantasy genre.
