Trailer for 'War of the Worlds' graphic novel playing on the internet.
The 'War of the Worlds' graphic novel from Best Sellers Illustrated will arrive in bookstores later this month, but it's already being promoted on the Internet with a Hollywood-style trailer.
"Trailers for novels have been attempted in the past," said Best Sellers Illustrated's Aron Kessler, "but it's difficult to bring them off, because essentially you're dealing with a prose book. Graphic novels, on the other hand, are a visual medium."
Sandpail Productions, a media company with clients including Walt Disney Concert Hall and the J. Paul Getty Museum, created the 'War of the Worlds' Graphic Novel trailer. Sandpail's Pamela Glintenkamp, who has managed projects for Lucasfilm, was the trailer's executive producer.
The graphic novel trailer includes music, sound effects and voice talent, along with black-and-white panels from the book, many of which depict the havoc wreaked by Martian tripod war machines in and around New York City.
"H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi tale took place in London and its environs," said author Stephen Stern, "but Orson Wells' updated radio version that caused a nationwide panic was set in the New York metropolitan area. We're doing the same thing, in a post-9/11 world."
With the success of 'Sin City,' graphic novels have come of age, and they'll no doubt continue to be promoted on the Internet with movie-like trailers.
The trailer debuted last week at http://www.waroftheworldsfilm.com, a fansite for the Spielberg/Cruise movie. It can now also be seen at the publisher's website over at http://www.bestsellersillustrated.com
