After a few months of testing and feedback from an early adopter version, Flatspace II: The Rise of the Scarrid has been released by Cornutopia Software.
Flatspace II is set after the first Flatspace game and features a new alien race, the Scarrid, that live with humans in a state of cold war. Players can choose to play as a human or scarrid character.
Like its predecessor, Flatspace II is a space trading game with a top-down viewpoint that includes rogue-like elements such as a choice of character and a revealing map. Unlike the first game though, Flatspace II includes artifact objects that can be obtained using a new a guild system. If you trade enough for example, you can get trading upgrades such as enhanced defences, and Alien Hunters can obtain special weapons and ships.
Another big change in Flatspace II is the game balancing. Compared to Flatspace the game is less punishing to beginners. There are more difficulty settings, and more player goals including official secrets and the ability to own space stations.
