Television company Bentley Productions has acquired an option on Mike Carey's Felix Castor series of novels about a freelance exorcist walking the mean - and haunted - streets of London.

The first Castor novel, The Devil You Know, is a supernatural noir set in a world where the dead began to rise in the years approaching the millennium, and now form a significant minority group - think Raymond Chandler meets Joss Whedon.

Mike Carey started his writing career in comics and graphic novels, and now has a track record as a scriptwriter. He has originated several TV series, and his latest commissioned film is expected to start filming in September 2006 with Holly Hunter in the lead. His comics credits include Lucifer and Hellblazer (filmed as Constantine and starring Keanu Reeves) for DC Comics, and this summer he takes over as writer of Marvel Comics' Ultimate Fantastic Four and X-Men, two of the company's flagship titles.

The Devil You Know is Carey's first novel; it was published by Orbit on 6th April and the second in the series, Vicious Circle, is to be published in October 2006. Carey is currently writing the third book.

Bentley Productions are the producers of TV series Midsomer Murders and Ultimate Force. Orbit, an imprint of Little, Brown Book Group Ltd, is a UK publisher of fantastic fiction and home to authors including Iain M Banks, Terry Brooks and Robert Jordan.
