British actress Jaime Winstone (Kidulthood) will team up with America's Carl Weathers (Rocky, Predator) and Eddie Shin (ER) in Phoo Action, a kung-fu superhero drama based on comic characters created by Jamie 'Tank Girl' Hewlett.

Jaime, daughter of actor Ray Winstone, takes on the role of Whitey Action, an unruly teenage heroine who joins together with hapless Buddhist kung-fu cop Terry Phoo (played by Eddie Shin) to form an unlikely, but effective, crime-fighting team. The year is 2012 and London is in the grip of mutant criminals. Only Terry Phoo and Whitey Action can save the nation, uniting to create chaos and comedy, mischief and mayhem to become heroes for a future generation. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the wonderfully warped world of Phoo Action.

Rocky legend Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed in Rocky I, II, II and IV) stars as Benjamin Benson, Chief of Police and long-suffering father to the rebellious Whitey. And the American idol is delighted to be part of the Phoo Action.

Carl told SFcrowsnest.com, "It really is an absolute pleasure to be joining the Phoo Action cast and to film in Scotland. "As soon as I read the script I had to get involved with Phoo Action - even the title alone makes me smile and I knew right away I wanted to be part of its kung-fu madness. I seem to have a growing audience who like to see me have fun in films and Phoo Action certainly promises to deliver. It's a fantastically different drama to add to my resume and I'm delighted to be part of something so unique. It's my first time visit to Scotland and I'm looking forward to sampling a few of the single malts while I'm here."

Jaime added, "When I was younger I dreamt of being an action hero so landing the role of Whitey Action is all I could ask for from a role. Whitey's like an anarchist teenage superhero who's on a personal crusade. In Terry Phoo she finds her crime-fighting soul mate and together they form Phoo Action. This drama is crazy to work on and really creative - it's a dream drama for me."

Based on characters created by Jamie Hewlett (Gorillaz, Monkey: Journey to the East, Tank Girl) for the comic strip Get The Freebies, which first appeared in The Face magazine, Phoo Action is written by Matthew Enriquez Wakeham, Peter Martin and Jessica Hynes.

Creative Director Jamie Hewlett told us, "I think it's the most weird and radical thing that the BBC have taken on since the Young Ones first aired in the early Eighties. The script, the cast, the crew, the costumes and the look are all fantastic and the BBC have let the programme stay true to the original idea in every way. I really look forward to seeing the finished programme."

Matthew Read, Producer, went on to say, "Jamie Hewlett is one of the most visionary talents of his generation and so it was always going to be a major challenge adapting his work for the screen. However the screenplay has attracted an incredibly talented group of people including top Doctor Who director Euros Lyn, the outstanding emerging actress Jaime Winstone and Rocky legend Carl Weathers."

Filming on Phoo Action started this week in Glasgow and the drama is the first to be filmed in BBC Scotland's new state-of-the-art headquarters at Pacific Quay. The 60-minute drama is one of six new dramas for BBC Three which will transmit early next year. The others are: Being Human, Mrs Inbetweeney, The Things I Haven't Told You, W10 LDN and The Six.
