The science fiction and fantasy small press community are intensely worried about the implications of Amazon buying second-hand book retailer ABEBooks.
Nathan Barker of Scrybe Press and Kayleighbug Books wrote in to SFcrowsnest via our new Hivemind service with some worrying news.
"Amazon.com just acquired ABEBooks.com. On the surface, this seems to be an issue but not a huge one. The real concern comes from the fact that ABE already owned Bookfinder (the book search service that allowed customers to check prices everywhere - Amazon, ABE, Biblio, Alibris, independents, and so on)."
"ABE also recently acquired Chrislands.com which is the website host and backend service provider for almost every single independent online bookstore. ABE also owned Fillz.com - the inventory and sales management package used by most high-volume online independent bookstores."
"The repercussions of Amazon owing all of this is mind-boggling... they essentially just seized control of the independent bookstore trade."
Any other genre small presses or indie SFF booksellers worried about this? Drop us a live via Hivemind. At least we haven't been bought by Amazon yet!
