SFcrowsnest.com has been doing some analysis of the genre of the top twenty movies (by millions of bums on seats in the cinema), and has found that over 75 per cent of this decade's top movies were fantasy films. The next most popular genre was chick-flicks, then spy-fi, with science fiction squeaking in fourth.

Here's the top twenty films by the audience who saw them in the UK (film, year of release, audience figures in millions).

The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - 12.3
The Return of the King (2003) - 11.8
The Two Towers (2002) - 11.4

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) - 10.8
Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest (2006) -10.2

SciFi - 7.7

We tot them up to get each genre's totals...

Fantasy - 150.93m
Chick-flick - 21.4m
Spy-fi - 20.85m
SciFi - 7.7m

Wow, that's a lot of fantasy films dominating the movie charts! Apart from the last Indiana Jones movie, which we normally would classify as fantasy (Roswell and Aliens made it hard to do that this time round), science fiction didn't get too much of a look in, despite having some excellent films out in the wild (Moon, anyone?).

We're just looking forward to someone picking up The Court of the Air and the other Jackelian series of novels as fantasy films some time soon!

NB - all figures based on the UK FDA raw stats.
