Our friends on the FP blog have just heard from Chris Staros, publisher at the very fine indy comics mob Top Shelf (who will be publishing Moore and O'Neill's new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series this year) that one of their graphic novels, Swallow Me Whole by Nate Powell, is short-listed for the LA Times Book Prize.
It's in the Young Adult category, although the work wasn't aimed specifically at a YA audience, but with teenage characters I'd think many a teen would enjoy it and empathise with the characters to some extent.
Also in the YA category are Messrs Pratchett (for Nation) and Gaiman (for The Graveyard Book), so nice showing for the comics and the SF&F folks. Chris tells them that it's the first time this award has featured a graphic novel since Spiegelman's Maus, so they are all extremely chuffed to be nominated.
