Children's fantasy author Brian Jacques has passed away from old age at 71. His best known series was of course Redwall, where talking animals went furry to protect Redwall Abbey from the rat warlord Cluny the Scourge.
No more from the heroic mouse Matthias then, sadly, and the other denizens of Mossflower Woods.
Brian was born, raised and actually stayed in Liverpool for all of his life. His working class roots and popular success in the fantasy genre meant that he was overlooked and snubbed by the literary establishment (Carnegie Medal nominated, never a winner - rarely reviewed).
But his young fans loved him and his books. And fuck it, that's all that ever mattered to him.
Goodbye, Brian. We'll raise a glass of wine to you in Crowsnest Towers tonight, and set fire to a copy of the TLS in your memory.
