26/12/2008. An online trailer for Tim Burton's new animated sci-fi movie, which looks as odd as always. In a parallel reality Earth, humanity has destroyed itself in an endless series of world wars, but the last human scientist creates some genetically engineered sock-puppet sized creatures to be defenders of our legacy. They have to go on a quest hunted by evil droids that have also survived. Elijah Wood stars with an impressive cast.

26/12/2008. Arcana Studios, Legacy Filmworks and Bron Management are getting together to produce a slate of comic based fantasy and science fiction-based movies. Paradox introduces homicide detective Sean Nault, a cop on a parallel Earth who is investigating a baffling series of murders committed by a means his Earth has never seen before: the power of science. Sean uncovers an apocalyptic plot that will lead him to another dimension and the realisation that, unless he prevents it, both Earths could well be destroyed.

Survivors gets a second series

26/12/2008. Pádraig Ó Méalóid has interviewed writer Neil Gaiman for the Forbidden Planet International.

Evil Ways
26/12/2008. Evil Ways by Justin Gustainis, the second volume in the Quincey Morris Supernatural Investigations series published by Solaris Books, is due for publication on December 30th 2008. The first novel about occult investigator Quincey Morris and his partner, white witch Libby Chastain, Black Magic Woman, was released last January.

Odyssey 2010 guest update
26/12/2008. Sci-fi writer Iain M Banks has been added as an additional guest of honour to the Odyssey 2010 science fiction convention while Carlos Ezquerra will be artist guest of honour.

Mars watery past
20/12/2008. Researchers using a powerful instrument aboard NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have found a long sought-after mineral on the Martian surface and, with it, unexpected clues to the Red Planet's watery past.

An Estronomicon Xmas

Anticipation issues 3rd progress report
16/12/2008. Anticipation, the 67th World Science Fiction Convention, has just released its third Progress Report online.

Defying Gravity
16/12/2008. Ron Livingston (Band Of Brothers etc) is set to star in Defying Gravity, a new TV science fiction drama from James Parriott (of Grey's Anatomy fame) and Michael Edelstein (Desperate Housewives). Defying Gravity was inspired by the BBC's Space Odyssey: Voyage To The Planets, seen on BBC One in 2004. The 13-part scifi thriller begins filming in Canada in January 2009, and will broadcast on BBC Two later next year.

Merlin will be dragon back to the screens
15/12/2008. Merlin, BBC One's Saturday night fantasy drama has been re-commissioned for a second series.

Stargate Universe goes Trainspotting
15/12/2008. Scottish actor Robert - The Full Monty - Carlyle has been cast in the lead role of Doctor David Rush on the SCIFI Channel's new TV series, Stargate Universe, the latest of MGM's Stargate spin-offs. Production will begin in Canada's Vancouver in February 2009 for a summer 2009 premiere.

Trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine
14/12/2008. The first trailer for the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine has hit our online screens - this superhero film is due for release on May 1st 2009, is directed by Gavin Hood and, as always, stars Hugh Jackman in a prequel to the X-Men flicks.

Chris Weitz bitten by the Twilight bug
14/12/2008. Filmmaker Chris Weitz has been hired to direct the second film in the Twilight vampire film franchise. The film, New Moon, is based on the second book in author Stephenie Meyer's series.

Rockets due to fly in new sci-fi space combat
12/12/2008. Hydra Miniatures are planning a new science fiction game called War Rocket, to add some pulp sci-fi space combat action alongside their range of cute 32mm pulp SFF figures. Flash, arrhhh, he'll zap every one of us.

12/12/2008. Sci-fi literary agent John Jarrold has concluded a four-book World rights deal for Canadian fantasy writer Ian Cameron Esslemont with Simon Taylor of Transworld Publishers in London for a strong five-figure sum. The first book, called Stonewielder, is due for delivery in September 2009, and publication in 2010.

Pax Britannia: Human Nature
12/12/2008. A new steampunk novel from Jonathan Green is due out in January 2009. The Whitby Mermaid, prize exhibit of Cruickshanks - Cabinet of Curiosities, has been stolen. But have no fear; consulting detective Gabriel Wraith is on the case.

Circus of Sin
11/12/2008. Scifi agent to the stars John Jarrold has concluded a deal for the third urban fantasy novel by US-based British author Natasha Rhodes with Christian Dunn of Solaris, the mainstream genre imprint of Games Workshop’s publishing division, BL Publishing. The book, entitled Circus of Sin, is due for delivery in August 2009, and will be published in 2010.

King Rolen’s Kin
11/12/2008. John Jarrold has concluded a three-book deal for Australian fantasy writer Rowena Cory Daniells with Christian Dunn of Solaris, the mainstream genre imprint of Games Workshop’s publishing division, BL Publishing. The series is entitled King Rolen’s Kin and the first book, provisionally called Byren's Bane, is due for publication in early 2010.

Dragon Ball Evolution trailer
11/12/2008. Trailer for the 2009 US live-action adaptation of the Dragon Ball manga/anime. The story centers around the adventures of Goku, with Justin Chatwin cast as Goku, while James Marsters will be evil Lord Piccolo.

Time Machines Repaired While-U-Wait
11/12/2008. K. A. Bedford’s newest science fiction novel Time Machines Repaired While-U-Wait has been nominated for Australia’s Aurealis Award. Bedford celebrated his newest science fiction novel earlier this fall with appearances at the World Science Fiction Convention in Denver Colorado and was the Guest of Honor at ConVersion in Calgary Alberta. Time Machines Repaired While-U-Wait is unlike his other three releases: Orbital Burn, Eclipse, and Hydrogen Steel.

Terminator Salvation
09/12/2008. Online trailer for the first decent-sized trailer for the Terminator Salvation flick. It is the fourth Terminator film and stars Christian Bale as John Connor and Sam Worthington as cyborg Marcus Wright.

Life on HD 189733b
09/12/2008. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet orbiting another star. This breakthrough is an important step toward finding chemical biotracers of extraterrestrial life.

Kim Stanley Robinson hears the Clarion call
08/12/2008. The Clarion Foundation has announced its teaching crew for the 2009 Clarion Writers Workshop, and the fantasy and science fiction writers lecturing include Holly Black, Larissa Lai, Robert Crais, and Kim Stanley Robinson, with Elizabeth Hand and Paul Park team teaching the final two weeks.

05/12/2008. The world greatest science fiction fan, Forrest J Ackerman, has finally lost his battle against old age and joined the great circle of fandom in the sky. Goodbye Forry, they sure don't clone them like you anymore.

04/12/2008. Ahoy, you landlubbers. To coincide with Fast Ships, Black Sails, the new pirate anthology from Jeff and Ann VanderMeer and Night Shade books, are hosting a promotional video featuring contributors performing a reading from the collection.

Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp go Bats
04/12/2008. Dark Knight fans have given their advice to movie director Christopher Nolan for his next Batman film. According to a Blockbuster survey, scifi movie fans are hoping to see Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie play lead roles. The villains that fans would most like to see Batman take on are The Riddler and The Joker's therapist turned girlfriend, Harley Quinn.

A little bit of spy-fi
04/12/2008. TV spy-fi drama Spooks is set to return next year, the BBC has told us. The drama from Kudos Film has been recommissioned for an eighth series. The last series saw the arrival of Robin Hood star Richard Armitage as Lucas North, the return of Hermione Norris as Ros Myers, the discovery of Connie James as the MI5 mole and the murder of Ben Kaplan by one of his own.

Carrie Vaughn to be 2009 Odyssey writer-in-residence
03/12/2008. Odyssey - a writer's workshop for the science fiction, fantasy, and horror-writing community - has announced their 2009 writer-in-residence as Carrie Vaughn, author and Odyssey 1998 graduate. Carrie is the author of the Kitty novels, about a werewolf who hosts a talk radio show.

Disney gets into MMORPG fantasy gaming
03/12/2008. The Walt Disney Company are getting ready for their first Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game to be called Disney Fantasy Online, with a Spring 2009 launch planned. Gamers of Disney Fantasy Online will be immersed in a Disney-themed central world, based on themes of magic, adventure and romance with non-playing Disney character hosts such as Mickey Mouse, preparing and training the gamers for the, ahem, adventures that lie ahead.

New Stainless Steel Rat book

01/12/2008. Angry Robot, HarperCollins new guerilla-indy sci-fi imprint, has hired Lee Harris as assistant editor. He starts work January 2009.
