An Odyssey for Martin?
22/12/2003 Source: Jessica Martin

Odyssey, the creative writing workshop for SFF authors, has announced its 2004 session with George R. R. Martin as special writer-in-residence.

Next year Odyssey will be hosting New York Times best-selling author George R.R. Martin as a special writer-in-residence at its summer 2004 session.

Martin, author of numerous novels including the series A Song of Ice and Fire, has won a Bram Stoker Award, a World Fantasy Award, two Nebula Awards, four Hugo Awards, and six Locus Awards. His short story collections include A Song for Lya and Other Stories; Sandkings; and GRRM: a rretrospective, forthcoming from Subterranean Press. Two of his short stories, "Remembering Melody" and "Sandkings," were adapted for television while his story "Nightflyers" was made into a feature film. He has also edited the anthology series New Voices in Science Fiction and Wild Cards.

The Odyssey workshop's guest lecturers will include authors Catherine Asaro, Ellen Kushner, Delia Sherman, Barry B. Longyear, Bob Mayer; and editor/writer Gardner Dozois.

Lecturers will of course share their own perspectives and critique student manuscripts.

Tuition is $1,500 and housing in on-campus townhouses runs $397.50 for the six weeks. Students have the option of receiving college credit.

Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor and graduate of the program, Odyssey will be offering three Gandalf Grant scholarships to the most promising writers of the class of 2004 in the amounts of $1,250, $500, and $250.
