A Diskworld Movie at Last? 16/12/2003 . Source: Jessica Martin
Pratchett gets a film, with Troll Bridge. Yes, Troll Bridge is a forthcoming short-film based on the story written by that rather well known master of the comedy/fantasy, author Terry Pratchett.
It's been known for thousands of people drop into theatres all over the world to watch el Tel's stories adapted and performed on the stage. And given the current film climate for the literary fantasy genre - with such blockbusters as The Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter, and Peter Pan riding high - it may be that a "Pratchett" film made now may indeed become a success.
As the production doesn't have the financial backing of a major studio, Snowgum Films has had to settle for a story that was both intimate and above all: non-profit.
Apparently, no one involved in Troll Bridge will receive money for their efforts, and production expenses are being covered by people willing to sponsor the film for no other reward than to see the project's completion.
Any sponsorship money left over - after all production expenses are covered - will be donated to the Orangutan Foundation UK.
Troll Bridge is Terry's parody of the barbarian film genre made popular in the mid-80s. It features the world's last barbarian hero - now at the age of eighty-seven - becoming bitter at his fast-paced world of change.
Having had enough, he rides off to face his ultimate challenge. A challenge that is nothing short of suicide. AKA to face a troll in single combat. Spoofing the Conan films (and at least one well known fairy-tale), Troll Bridge is a humorous fable that carries a small nucleus of seriousness and sorrow.
Well heck, life can be tough for a barbarian hero in a land where the undead have formed equal rights movements, and goblins are now protected on the endangered species list.
Conceived in Oz's Melbourne by Snowgum Films, the 'Gummers are a group of enthusiasts and pros who have banded together for the purpose of producing films that they, themselves, would desire to watch.
