Barnes and Rusch Win 5th Endeavour Award 19/11/2003 . Source: Jessica Martin
SF authors Steven Barnes and Oregon writer Kristine Kathryn Rusch strike gold. Washington writer Steven Barnes and Oregon writer Kristine Kathryn Rusch jointly won the fifth Endeavour Award, which was presented on Friday, November 14th 2003. Rusch won for The Disappeared (Roc Science Fiction) while Barnes won for Lion's Blood (Warner Books).
The Award was announced by Martin H. Greenberg, who was one of this year's judges. Barnes and Rusch each received an etched glass plaque produced by Seattle artist Ashley Harper and a grant of $500.
Finalists who attended the ceremony received $100 to help defray their expenses.
The presentation of the Award followed a reception at OryCon, Oregon's main science fiction and fantasy convention.
The annual Endeavour Award honors a distinguished science fiction or fantasy book, either a novel or a single-author collection of stories, by a writer from the Pacific Northwest.
The Award combines judging by fans of the literature and by professional writers and editors of science fiction and fantasy. Entries are scored by seven readers randomly selected from a panel of readers. The five highest scoring books then go to three professional judges. The judges for 2003 were Joe Haldeman, Martin H. Greenberg, and Douglas Smith.
The other finalists for 2003 were: The Maquisarde by Washington writer Louise Marley, (Ace Books); Solitaire, by Washington writer Kelley Eskridge, (Eos); and Technogenisis, by Washington writer Syne Mitchell (ROC Science Fiction).
Award Eligibility and Nominations
The 2004 Endeavour Award will be presented at next year's OryCon for a book published during 2003. To be eligible for the award, a work must be an original novel or single author collection of stories published, as either a hardcover or a paperback, for the first time in the English language during the calendar year preceding the giving of the award.
The author(s) must have been living in the Pacific Northwest--Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, The Yukon, and British Columbia--when they wrote the majority of the book and when it was accepted for publication.
If books are first published outside of the United States or Canada and are not entered at that time, they may be entered when first published in the United States or Canada.
The Endeavour Award represents a collaborative effort by writers and fans of Science Fiction and Fantasy to recognize works of excellence. It is named for the H.M. Bark Endeavour, the ship in which Capt. James Cook explored the Pacific and is sponsored by Oregon Science Fiction Conventions, Inc. (OSFCI), the organization that sponsors OryCon and other Oregon conventions. OryCon has been supported by grants from several OryCons and Norwescon, a Seattle-area convention.
The downtown Portland (Oregon) Borders Books and Music will sponsor a fund raising day for the Award on December 2, 2003.
Deadline for Next Year
Writers, editors, agents, and persons who attended the previous year's OryCon, may nominate works for the award. Nominations must be accompanied by four copies of the book for use in judging.
Deadline to enter books published during 2003 is February 15, 2004. The Endeavour Committee, however, strongly encourages entries as soon as books are published. Nomination forms may be printed from the Endeavour Award's home page.
