Sandman Loses no Sleep
07/10/2003 Source: Jessica Martin

Neil Gaiman's Sandman becomes the first Graphic Novel to hit the New York Times Best Sellers List.

DC Comics' Vertigo graphic novel 'The Sandman: Endless Nights' by Neil Gaiman has debuted at number 20 for hardcover fiction on the New York Times Best Sellers List, marking the first time ever an American comic book publisher has earned a spot on the list.

The graphic novel, which was released on September 17th 2003, is a collection of seven dark short stories: Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium, Destruction, Destiny and Dream. There's also seven different artists illustrating these stories of Gaiman's - shall we say - rather dysfunctional fantasy family.

"We are extremely proud to have this extraordinary graphic novel mark the growing importance of the category to book buyers across the country ... and congratulate Neil and join him in thanking his readers," Paul Levitz, DC Comics' President blurted out to the 'Nest.

Once again graphic novels seem to be a growing category in mainstream bookstores. We've been there before with Watchmen and the like in the late 1980s/early 90s, of course. It'll be interesting to see if this trend keeps up its head of steam.

Personally speaking, we like our comics with a little more plot and prefer to locate them a little further South of NG's rectum, but hey, it's art, so we'll cut DC and Neil some slack on this one.
