Patrick O'Brian meets Anne McCaffrey? 30/09/2004 . Source: Jessica Martin
Del Rey purchases a new three-book fantasy series. Del Rey has purchased a three-book series that could be described as "Patrick O'Brian meets Anne McCaffrey," according to acquiring editor Betsy Mitchell, Del Rey's VP/Editor-in-Chief.
The Temeraire series follows the adventures of a British ship captain whose promising naval career is cut short when one of his spoils of war turns out to be the unhatched egg of a fighting dragon. In author Naomi Novik's version of history, Napoleon and his opponents wage an aerial war by means of dragon-power, using every type of beast from heavy bomber dragons to small, quick reconnaissance breeds.
William Laurence, whose ship captures the dragon egg, becomes the captain of the young dragon, Temeraire, and Britain's defenses are strengthened immeasurably by their addition to the aerial corps.
The three books mark the first sale for author Naomi Novik, a history buff with a particular fascination for the Napoleonic era.
She began writing fiction as a guilty pleasure while studying for her masters degree in computer science at Columbia University, and has developed several computer games. She is the founder and organizer of Vividcon, an annual convention for digital video enthusiasts. She lives in New York with her husband.
Editor-in-Chief Betsy Mitchell also let us know she has just returned from the Maui Writers Conference where, in addition to discussing several new projects with Terry Brooks, she rode down the side of a volcano on a bicycle (we can only assume its tires were made of vulcanized rubber).
Also recently returned is Editorial Director Shelly Shapiro who had been on sabbatical. While her time off did not involve a volcano, she told the 'Nest it was certainly instrumental in harnessing the volcanism of her soul!
