A Chat with Jarrold 05/07/2004 . Source: Jessica Martin
John Jarrold chats about his plans for his new genre literary agency. Now that ex-editor and legend in SFF book publishing John Jarrold has started adding authors to this stable (see previous news stories on Stephen Hunt, Japser Kent and Mark Newton being signed up), we had a quick chat with him about the direction of his newly minted genre lit. agency.
SFC: What books/novels are you taking on as an agent?
I'll be working with SF, fantasy, thrillers, crime novels and historical fiction. Basically, I only want to deal with authors who give me the sort of buzz I got when I first read Ken MacLeod's debut, THE STAR FRACTION, which I acquired as an editor for Random House, or Jon Courtenay Grimwood, or Iain Banks' USE OF WEAPONS, which I published at Orbit. I want honestly to feel that total enthusiasm and then pass it on to the publishers to whom I send my authors' work.
SFC: How many authors do you intend to take on?
"Not too many. I now (as of July 2nd) have three on board and if I get to Christmas with five or six I will be perfectly happy - but I'd also be content with these three if I don't see more authors whose writing enthuses me immediately in the way these blokes' has."
SFC: Are you continuing to work as a book doctor?
"Yes. I have to pay my bills, and no one ever made huge amounts of money immediately upon becoming an agent (or later on, mostly!). I would like to think that I might be able to concentrate on being an agent by the end of 2005, but script doctoring and freelance editing will make up most of my income until the agency takes off."
There you have it, direct from the horse's mouth.
