Black to the Future

The genre's first black science fiction festival has nearly arrived. June 11th-13th, 2004, will see the U.S's first black science fiction festival being held at the The Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas in Seattle.
The Forum aims to celebrate writers and artists that challenge the status quo through their SFF work. It's a 3-day multidisciplinary festival featuring some of the U.S's leading African American science fiction novelists and essayists including Octavia Butler, Tananarive Due, Steven Barnes, and Walter Mosley.
The festival program explores science fiction in literature, film, music, and other forms of creative expression; celebrating the accomplishments black artists have made to speculative fiction.
The festival includes:
• Panels, talks, and book signings
• The "Writing the Other" workshop
• A Black Science Fiction Film Festival
• Performing Arts
• A Black Science Fiction Book store and information room
"Black to the Future will provide a welcome networking opportunity for writers who are currently published, but it would electrify young writers and fans, black and white, who have never considered the degree to which writers of color have been a part of this field," SFF writer Tananarive Due explained to the 'Nest.
