Clarion South targets international applicants

The Australian-based Clarion South SFF writing workshop is actively seeking applications from around the world for its 2005 workshop. The Clarion South 2005 speculative fiction writing workshop will run for six weeks in January and February next year at Brisbane's Griffith University in Queensland.
Robert Hoge - their convenor - said Clarion South would provide 17 up-and-coming writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror with access to some of Australia's and the world's leading genre writers and editors.
Tutors for 2005 are: US editor and anthologist Ellen Datlow; US author Michael Swanwick; New York Times bestseller Sean Williams; Australian and UK fantasy author Ian Irvine; Australian young adult writer Margo Lanagan; and Australian-based US author Scott Westerfeld.
Robert said the 2005 tutors aims to offer a range of knowledge, experience, teaching styles and industry networks.
"The workshop has been designed to fill a niche for those emerging speculative fiction writers who lack opportunities to meet their peers and polish their craft," Robert explained to the 'Nest. "We've already started receiving applications from around Australia - and we want more.
"But we're also keen to make Clarion South a truly international experience. We encourage applications from overseas and will do our best to help any participants chosen from outside Australia to get to Brisbane for the workshop."
Robert went to to say organisers were also interested to hear from any professionally published authors who would like to tutor future Clarions in Australia.
Presented by Fantastic Queensland, Clarion South consists of a live- in "residency". Mornings are devoted to critiquing manuscripts in a workshop setting; afternoons, evenings, and weekends are devoted to individual writing and conferences with the writer-in-residence. Participants produce new work and receive feedback on the structure, style and substance of their writing.
"We've already had participants sell work to major Australian publications, sell work overseas and secure US agents," Robert said. "We're looking to make even more of an impact in 2005."
